The General Teaching Council
About the GTC
Launched in September 2000, the General Teaching
Council for England (GTC) is the independent professional body for
teaching in England. They are a coalition of teachers and
external partners, such as parents and governors, who have an
interest in the education sector. The GTC are committed
to securing the best possible standards of learning and achievement
for young people.
The GTC has three main functions:
- Maintaining a register of qualified teachers in
England.
- Enabling the teaching profession to regulate
itself.
- Providing advice to the government and other
agencies of key issues surrounding teaching and learning.
Application process
All trainee teachers must be provisionally
registered with the GTC before starting on a training
programme.
When you attend an interview for a place on
any of York St John University's ITT programmes you will be
asked to complete a GTC Suitability Declaration form. This
form needs to be returned to us at your interview.
Providing that this declaration meets the
GTC requirements, once you have enrolled on your
programme you will be recommended by us to be
provisionally registered and will be able to commence your
training.
From provisional registration to full registration
When you have completed your training and been
awarded QTS you will become eligible for full registration with the
GTC. You will automatically progress on to this on
unless you contact the GTC to let them know that you no longer
require registration. Further details on the GTC are
available at www.gtce.org.uk
