Part-time and flexible study
York St John aims to help you achieve
your life or career aspirations, however you study with us. We
welcome students who want to study with us part-time, or flexibly,
and we'll help you to explore which options are best for you.
Doing 'modules'
Each of our qualifications is made up of 'modules' (packages of
learning). You can choose to study single modules in different
subjects over time, or you may want to study for a qualification,
such as a degree. Here, we can put together a learning plan with
you, with a number of modules which are realistic for your
situation.
We know that your circumstances can change, so you might want to
take more or less modules over time, become a full-time student, or
even take a break from your studies. We are committed to helping
you deal with the challenges of studying this way, and making
informed choices.
Learning over the web
Some modules can be studied through Supported Open Learning
(SOL). This is where you may learn at home as well as coming to our
campus. Most of our courses have their reading lists, lecture
notes, and assignment details on a website which you will be able
to access from any computer once you have registered on a
course.
This doesn't mean that you are left on your own - there are
opportunities to discuss your work with other students through
on-line discussion groups, and a tutor will be available to offer
advice and guidance.
Recognising your experience
If you have life experience, in a work or community setting, you
might want to consider Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning
(APEL). This is where you put together a claim for
'learning-by-doing' which is relevant to your
qualification. Staff will help you through this process to
ensure it relates closely to your chosen subject.
