Your Learning

The facilities and resources at York St John have been carefully developed to support students as they learn: your needs are at the centre of our planning processes.

Your learning will be organised into three categories:

  • Face-to-face with a tutor in lectures, seminars and tutorials.
  • Supported Open Learning (SOL) which recognises and builds upon the way in which people learn best.
  • Independent learning and assessment where you will work individually or in groups.

York St John aims to help you achieve your life or career aspirations, however you study with us. We welcome students who want to study with us part-time, or flexibly, and we'll help you to explore which options are best for you.

  • Doing 'modules' - each of our qualifications is made up of 'modules'. You can choose to study single modules in different subjects over time, or you may want to study for a qualification, such as a degree.
  • Learning over the web - Supported Open Learning (SOL) means you may learn at home as well on campus. Most courses have reading lists, lecture notes, and assignment details available on-line which you can access from any computer once you have registered on a course. There are also opportunities to discuss your work with other students through on-line discussion groups.
  • Recognising your experience - if you have experience in a work or community setting you might want to consider Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). This is where you put together a claim for 'learning-by-doing' which is relevant to your qualification. Staff will help you through this process to ensure it relates closely to your chosen subject.
