Second Semester

Another year has begun and I am in my second semester. I had a wonderful Christmas and a New Year. I went for the count down at the York Minster on New Year’s Eve and truly enjoyed the festive spirit along with the enormous crowd.

The second semester has already started in full swing and I am back to my normal routine of attending lectures. Apart from classes, I decided to a volunteer in the ‘Careers. Officially Not Scary!’ campaign. During the past week I was making origami dinosaurs with fellow volunteers. Although the first attempt of making an origami dinosaur was immensely difficult after a couple of times it became easier. I not only learnt a new craft work but also it was great chance to meet some new friends. We had good laughs over these dinosaur making sessions. It was indeed great fun!

People in York are very friendly

Hello! I am Chaya. I come from the pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka!

I have almost completed two and a half months in York St. John University. The month of September passed away quickly as I was busy fitting in to the new environment. It has been a very smooth process as each and every individual in the University has been very helpful and kind. I think even the people in York are very friendly. I cannot stop myself smiling back at pedestrians who pass by when you have a walk around the city. At times York smells of chocolate at night!!

I live at the Grange (university accommodation) and now I call it home. The fact that I live so close to university and always surrounded by students make me so lively and truly a part of York St John. I never had an instance that I felt I had no one to talk to. I have made wonderful friends in a period of 2 months.

We have an interesting mix of cultures in the class. This makes classroom discussions even more exciting and thought provoking. We don’t limit ourselves to the class. We had a couple of social outings as a class along with our tutors and I must say we truly enjoy them! Very recently, we went to watch ‘The Midsummer Night’s Dream’ at the Theatre Royal and we had a great evening! The play, the ambience and the company were brilliant!

It’s December and Christmas is just around the corner and I must say York looks absolutely beautiful! I’m sure it’s one of the most Christmassy cities in England! It’s my first Christmas in Europe and I’m very excited! I’m looking forward for it. Even though I’m away from home, I’m certain that I’m going to celebrate it in style with my local and international friends here in York!
