Black and minority ethnic students
We work closely with the Black minority
ethnic communities and their influencers in order to
raise aspirations and the confidence of young and mature learners
to consider the prospects of applying to higher education.
York St John University is leading outreach
activities with mature learners in community centre settings, and
with young people in schools to increase the network of ambassadors
for Higher Education.
The Outreach office is currently located in the Sangat Community
Centre, Keighley where York St John University staff have
facilitated a sustained partnership with the community in Keighley
over three years.
This years programme has included subject taster courses and
seminars in presentation skills, Visual research, and
Creativity, Drama, and supporting children's education.
There is also a series of stakeholder conversations to continue
to determine the needs of the community and to inform the
production of a portfolio of good practices in Community
engagement.

This was a major event to get the BME work of the ground in
April 2008, approximately 80 women from the Pakistani and
Bangladeshi community living and working in Bradford took part in
an inspirational day aimed at getting them to connect with higher

to get there"
"Fantastic! Highly motivational and
inspirational"
"The best about this event was interacting
and socialising with different people. Also being able to
listen to the barriers eg cultural barriers that people have"
"brilliant mix of delegates, from different

atmosphere of community people wanting to rethink what learning
opportunity might mean.
