Energy saving
Energy Saving tips
Why save energy?
Everyone in
the University Community can do their bit to save energy.
York St John University is committed to energy saving, for a number
of reasons including:
- To reduce the cost of the University gas and electricity
charges
- To reduce the impact that the University makes on the local and
global environment in terms of pollution and
CO2omissions
So what can I do to reduce energy use at University when using
my PC?
Notes for staff
- PCs and monitors begin to "sleep" after about five minutes of
user inactivity. Turn your monitor off when you leave your room for
any period of time.
- Users should "shut down" PCs/monitors at the end of each
working day and to consider shutting them down for any periods of
inactivity likely to be in excess of an hour.
- Printers - some local printers go dormant at computer shut
down. Where this is not the case local printers should
only be switched on when needed and turned off when
computers are shut down.
Notes for students
- Student machines are switched off by default. Allow for the
extra few minutes for the boot process before lessons are due to
start. Associated screens 'sleep' after about 5 minutes of user
inactivity.
- In the new Fountains Learning Centre, room management can be
invoked to enable whole rooms to be switched off while user demand
is low and currently nine of the eleven rooms are shut down
over night.
- Try to restrict usage of University-based activities where
possible and not to engage in leisure/games playing. This saves
money, the environment and frees up resources for other
students.
